Biddeford – I was trying to think of something clever to write for Christmas, some way to talk about shopping, or just some way to capture the spirit of the season. And strangely, I was at a loss for words.
Then I remembered Elements coffee shop on Main Street in Biddeford. It’s right across the street from the library and on a day when everyone and their brother seems to be headed to the mall or the large shopping centers, I thought it might be quiet here.
The small coffee shop is quiet, has books, pastries and other goodies to make you wish you went to the gym more often, but best of all, it’s a place to read.
For the better part of an hour, I just watched the world go by and caught up on some of my reading. I tell my students all the time, “if you want to become a better writer, you have to read.”
Well it was time I took some of my own advice. I recommend it for everyone.
The coffee is made to order and costs about $2, but I considered that well worth the price. It comes in a nice full mug, and the tables and chairs that fill the space are comfortable. There is even free Wi-Fi for those so inclined. But for me, it was a chance just to read and watch the weather through the large window at the front of the store.
Somehow, after an hour with my book, the world seemed like a better place. For what it’s worth, I hope you visit the shop.
