hen I think of Maine winter activities, the snow, the cold, and short winter days dominate the ideas that come to mind. I see images of snowshoeing, downhill and cross-country skiing, skating, hockey, and even ice fishing. For whatever reason, I don’t think about running and road races.
So what did I do? I joined a running group for the winter. For the next 10 weeks, along with 35 or so other hearty souls (feel free to translate that to fools), I’ll be running around the streets of Portland in an effort to improve my fitness, get ready for spring, and maybe lose a little weight.
A few weeks ago, I went to see Victoria Foley and John Rogers at the Maine Running Company (now called Fleet Feet Sports – Maine Running) about this year’s Kerrymen 5k road race. Fleet Feet Sports – Maine Running has been, and continues to be, a sponsor of the event and a good friend to the Maine Cancer Foundation.
Victoria told me about their company’s Winter Warrior training program, and I think it took me all of 30 seconds to say, “I’m in!”
We (oh yeah, I’m in the group now) meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and run/walk/train for the better part of an hour. On Saturday mornings there’s a longer group run and we all have a training program for the rest of the week. I didn’t think I’d say it, but it’s fun.
For me, it’s good to exercise outside and being part of the group, like being part of a team, motivates me when I might otherwise find the coach.
