BOOTHBAY HARBOR – During this time of the year, our state is filled with people looking for a way to spend an afternoon outdoors. On a cloudy day, one of the best places to visit along the coast might be the Coastal Botanical Gardens.
The gardens are open daily from April through October 3, from 9:00am until 5:00pm. Now I’ll be the first one to admit I didn’t know much of anything about the gardens, the plants from around the world that are planted on the grounds, or the trails that seemed to wind themselves around and along the Back River in Boothbay. It is a quiet and tranquil place where you can easily walk as little or as much as you like. The trails are well maintained and marked in such a way that it would be difficult to get lost. There are shuttles that run almost every 30 minutes for those who might have difficulty walking on the trails and visitors of all ages are welcomed.
The gardens include a visitor center, a restaurant for those who might wish to sit indoors and have a meal, and a takeout area (with tables) for those who would prefer to stay outdoors.
The admission prices are:
Seniors (65+): $14
Children (3 -17): $8
Children under 3: Free
Special rates are available for:
Groups of 10 or more: $12/adult and $5/child
Youth school or camp field trips: call for rates
On the first Wednesday of each month, admission is free for all year-round residents of Lincoln County, Maine.
But it is always best to check their website for current pricing and special promotions.
Here’s the secret that makes this trip special – when you are finished at the gardens, you are only minutes from the harbor and downtown Boothbay. Did I mention beer, clam chowder, and some of the world’s best fish and chips?
