BRUNSWICK – Writers find their inspiration in many places – family, nature, other writers, even in pieces of visual art. This winter, Shanti Arts Publishing is looking ahead to warmer days and is sponsoring a Summer Stories Short Story Competition.
“This is our first short story competition and we’re really excited about it,” said Christine Cote, Publisher for Shantiarts. “The Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance is handling the submissions, but we’ve gotten quite a few here,” she said. “There’s even an island school who is doing this as part of their class.”
The Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance and Shanti Arts Publishing are inviting all Maine authors to submit original short stories inspired by the paintings of Maine artist, Leslie Anderson. Winning submissions to the Summer Stories Short Story Competition will be published in a printed collection alongside Anderson’s paintings.
Award-winning Maine author Ron Currie, Jr. will serve as the competition’s judge. Currie’s books have earned him critical acclaim and several prestigious awards, including the Young Lions Fiction Award from the New York Public Library. The New York Times has said Currie is a “startlingly talented writer whose book “Everything Matters!” will pay no heed to ordinary narrative conventions… He survives the inevitable, apt comparisons to Kurt Vonnegut and writes in a tenderly mordant voice of his own.”
Winning authors will receive a $50 honorarium (in the form of a gift certificate) and three complimentary copies of the published book.
Writers will need to hurry, because submissions must be in by March 1, 2013. For more information on the contest, Leslie Anderson, or the sponsoring organizations, visit Shantiarts.co.
